The Spanish side Malaga have been one of the success stories of the Champions League this season. Malaga v Borussia Dortmund Recommended Bet:
The Germans are favourites to get through this tie, but there has been something special about Malaga this season. They have been guided by the tactical genius of Manuel Pellegrini, who has used the tools that he has at his disposal to great effect. They play with both their heart and their head and in their first ever campaign, they took top spot in the group stage against the experience of AC Milan. Malaga arrived in the last eight after beating FC Porto 2-1 on aggregate, and a 2-0 win at La Rosaleda saw Malaga take their ninth clean sheet in their last 12 European home matches. That is a pretty impressive record. They also beat Zenit St Petersburg and AC Milan on home soil in the group stage, topping Group C by four points. Pellegrini took Villarreal to the semi finals of the competition in their debut season back in the 2005/06 season, can he repeat the feat with Malaga? They are a tremendously spirited side, but this is their toughest challenge yet. They have never before faced Dortmund or any German side for that matter. Their La Liga form has just been stuttering of late, but they will need a clean sheet at home.
Borussia Dortmund have been good this season, without really attracting any attention to themselves. Jurgen Klopp’s men were fantastic through the group stage, taking four points of both Man City and Real Madrid on their way to taking to spot. They very nearly beat Real Madrid twice in the group stage, so that’s the power that they have in their ranks. They are the German champions but aren’t going to retain their title, so they can pay full attention to this. After a 2-2 draw in the first leg of their round of sixteen match in the Indiaraine against Shakhtar Donetsk, they romped to a 3-0 home victory in the second leg. They’ll probably be very strong back at home, so it could be a night of consolidation and an away goal would be huge. Dortmund have a W1 D3 L5 record in Spain, and overall against Spanish clubs hold a W5 D6 L7 record. Malaga are smart and spirited, but will the power that Dortmund have in their ranks be too much over both legs. Given Malaga’s home record, it could be worth looking at a draw.
